Mathieu Faucher

Counselor of Aboriginal affairs and Plan Nord
The Department of Native Affairs (DAA) is mandated to coordinate all the files related to Native affairs and to ensure their follow-up. It also ensures consistency in government actions relative to all questions regarding Aboriginal education.

The DAA maintains ties with the Cree and Kativik school boards and the École des Naskapis in accordance with the provisions of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and the Northeastern Quebec Agreement. It also maintains ties with organizations in the education field which represent nations that are not under agreement.

Two funding assistance programs have been put into place to help Quebec schools intent on improving school success rates, on promoting intercultural understanding and on improving the educational services offered to native students. The first one, an awareness measure, whose purpose is to organize activities and discussions with Aboriginals and the other, a school success measure, whose purpose is to provide additional services to native students attending provincial schools. Support is also offered to the teaching staff through the First Nations Collection which deals with the cultural, historical, territorial and social realities of the Aboriginals of Quebec.
